Project description

The Gaylord Resort and Convention Center is the anchor of the National Harbor development. The Gaylord’s 3,000 room hotel is the largest in the Mid-Atlantic region. The project included the hotel and the 60,000 sq. ft. convention hall as well as structured parking, outdoor areas, a spa, and other site amenities. The positive impact that this facility has had on Prince George’s County and National Harbor has been significant. To provide a value of this magnitude, the initial step was planning an impressive and cohesive site design. Identifying the necessary land bay, designing the necessary infrastructure documents, and obtaining approvals and permits in a timely and expeditious fashion were challenging. The appropriate civil design was difficult due to the size of the sprawling complex and the location on the banks of the Potomac River.

Soltesz has worked on the National Harbor project since its inception and, as a result, was very familiar with the land bay. The firm was able to quickly identify a site within National Harbor that met the requirements of the use and could be engineered efficiently and effectively. Extreme care was provided in the form of stormwater runoff to protect the Potomac River. Soltesz designed water quality/stormwater management facilities to capture the runoff, filter it, and reuse it on site. Also, being intimately familiar with Prince George’s County requirements, Soltesz was able to process the civil engineering plans quickly to ensure construction began without delay.
